The class I teach at the School of the Art Institute, "The Art of Crossing the Street - the Artist as Citizen" got on an old-fashioned yellow school bus to visit several neighborhoods to view a number of well-known community murals. The tour was led by artist and educator, Kiela Smith, a member of the Chicago Public Art Group. We visited sites in Bridgeport, Bronzeville and Navy Pier. Below is a slide show of some of the work we saw...

Tom Teaches at School of the Art Institute
"The Art of Crossing the Street" was started at the School of the Art Institute in 1997 to give students new ways to think about creativity and the role of the artist to society. I've been given the privilege of teaching it for the Fall of 2007. For our first class, Prof. Vince Michael the chair of the Department of Historic Preservation at the School, led the class on a El tour of the Loop!Saturday, September 1, 2007
Tom Presents at "Imagining America" Conference in Syracuse
Imagining America is a consortium of 70 colleges and universities whose mission is to strengthen the public role and democratic purposes of the humanities, arts, and design. I presented at their annual conference at Syracuse University on September 7, 2007. The presentation, "If You're At This Conference, Run For Local Office!" sums up my politics.
